What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Your wisdom teeth will normally begin to come in around the time you reach adulthood. If there isn’t enough room in your mouth for these third molars to come in naturally, they’ll become impacted underneath the gums. Impacted wisdom teeth can become painful and cause a number of dental problems over time. It is best to have problematic wisdom teeth removed as soon as possible.
Why might Wisdom Teeth Removal be needed?
If you leave impacted wisdom teeth in place, they can and will eventually cause trouble for you. You might experience periods of pain, tenderness, swelling and even foul breath. Over time, the teeth can push against the surrounding teeth, causing both crowding as well as damage to your smile. Some patients even suffer from recurrent headaches and earaches without a cause, and it may be associated to having impacted, infected wisdom teeth.
Who is a candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
We can take an x-ray known as a panoramic to identify if you have impacted wisdom teeth and if so, where they are currently located and positioned. If your wisdom teeth are a problem, we’ll recommend having them removed as soon as possible. Removing your wisdom teeth prevents future problems from developing, and it can take care of current issues you’re having involving the third molars. The process to remove your wisdom teeth is simple, easy and painless when done in our office.
What happens during the Wisdom Teeth Removal procedure?
We first provide you with either local or general anesthetic. When removing all four wisdom teeth, we will normally recommend general anesthetic to help the procedure go more smoothly. We then make an incision through the gums and remove the wisdom tooth underneath. We stitch the gums to help them heal and repeat the process for any other teeth. You can expect some minor swelling and pain following the surgery and for several days after leaving the office.
