What is Sleep Apnea Treatment?
Sleep apnea is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. Certain health conditions make a person more susceptible to developing sleep apnea. The condition causes the soft tissues at the back of the throat to essentially collapse over the airway, causing both loud snoring and constant cessations in breathing. An oral device can be made for you in our office that keeps this airway open.
Why is Sleep Apnea Treatment needed?
Sleep apnea can cause you to feel exhausted throughout the day. Because you’re not sleeping properly at night, you might be too tired to drive, go to work or spend time with your family. Your quality of life suffers because of a lack of deep, restful sleep. This is why it is important that you treat sleep apnea as soon as it’s found that you have the condition. Treatment of sleep apnea can even help with the loud snoring that accompanies the disorder.
Who is a candidate for Sleep Apnea Treatment?
Most patients who have either mild to moderate sleep apnea will benefit from treatment using an oral device. If you have more severe symptoms, you might benefit more from a CPAP machine or other medical device. However, most patients who have sleep apnea will benefit from the type of device we are able to make for them in our office. The device is custom made, so it is comfortable and effective.
What happens during the Sleep Apnea Treatment process?
We will begin by taking impressions of your teeth, gums and mouth. We use these molds to make a new dental device that you’ll wear at night. The device works by opening the airway and preventing the soft tissues at the back of the throat from collapsing over it. You will need to wear the device nightly in order for it to work effectively. You can have the device replaced as soon as you notice it’s showing signs of wear. These devices are often more comfortable for our patients to wear when compared to other medical devices.
