What is an Implant Restoration?
Dental implants are surgically inserted into the jawbone to replace the roots of a missing tooth. Over the course of a few months, the implant fuses with the underlying bone, becoming a solid part of your smile. Once the implant has healed, we are able to make an implant restoration for you that sits over top of the new implant. This might be a single dental crown, full fixed bridge or even an entire overdenture.
Why would an Implant Restoration be needed?
Implants themselves are not designed to enhance and fill in your smile. They are simply a titanium rod that is placed into the jawbone. The upper portion of the implant contains a small abutment, where a restoration can be made to sit on top. Implant restorations are different in that they are specifically designed to sit perfectly on top of implants.
What types of Implant Restorations are available?
There are several different types of implant restorations available. With the help of an exam, we can determine which restoration is right for you. The most common restoration is a single dental crown, which is used to replace only one missing tooth at a time. For multiple implants, we can make either a dental bridge or an overdenture that will fit comfortably on top.
What can be expected during the Implant Restoration process?
The first step is to allow the implant to heal fully. This involves the implant undergoing a process known as osseointegration, where the implant actually fuses with the underlying bone. From there, we will take impressions and use these to make a new restoration for you. You will then come back into the office to have the restoration placed. Most restorations, like crowns, simply screw onto the top of the implant to stay in place. Your restoration will last for many years before it may need to be fully replaced.
