What are Dental Fillings?
Bonding is designed to enhance your natural teeth and correct minor flaws and imperfections at the front of your smile. Unfortunately, when your teeth are chipped, cracked or have gaps and spaces between them, it can be difficult to feel confident in the way that you look. If this has been a problem for you, it might be time to consider the benefits of dental bonding. The bonding on your teeth can last for about 10 years before it’ll need to be replaced.
Why might Dental Fillings be needed?
The main reason for needing a filling is because you have a cavity. A cavity is caused when the acids from plaque are able to essentially “eat” away at the tooth. This causes a small area of decay to form, which can get larger over time without proper treatment. To prevent the tooth from becoming severely decayed, we remove the cavity and use a filling to enhance the tooth and fill in the hole.
What makes you a candidate for a Dental Filling?
Most smaller cavities won’t cause any pain or sensitivity. Because of this, it is important to keep up with regular six month appointments so that we can look for them. If you have a cavity, we recommend having it filled as soon as possible to prevent the decay from getting worse. We check for cavities both with a dental exam as well as with the help of x-rays.
What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?
The dental filling procedure will begin with anesthetic, which is used to numb the mouth. We then remove the cavity completely using a slow speed drill. The hole is then filled with a small composite filling, which is matched perfectly to the color of your natural teeth. The filling is packed into place and excess material smoothed away. We then cure the new filling with a special bright light. You can expect your composite filling to last for about a decade before it may need to be replaced.
